Matthew Sweet & Velvet Crush at 9:30 Club, Washington, DC - Nov. 13, 2004
Matthew Sweet and the Velvet Crush played at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC last night. The last time we saw Sweet was earlier this year at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA with the Thorns, a mini-super group with Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge.
Last night, Sweet traded off sets with his backing band the Velvet Crush. Sweet opened the show, then turned it over to Crush lead guitar and vocalist Paul Chastain, with drummer Ric Menck, for a second set, and then closed out the 3rd set with Matthew tunes.
During the first set, Matthew switched between several guitars including his big hollow body electric, while performing such favorites as "Ugly Truth", "Time Capsule" and "Sick of Myself".
Velvet Crush whipped through a few of their tasty rockers including "Going to My Mind", "Ash & Earth" and "Atmosphere".
Here's a scan of the setlist:
In addition to the planned setlist, "Girlfriend" was added. "Evageline" is listed but is cut off due to the roadie ripping off the stage floor -- although, we're grateful to have gotten it. And I can't tell what song was crossed off the set.
We had a good time and everyone seemed in fine spirits. It was an early show starting around 6:30 and then followed by a late show with Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion.
Not enough Matthew & Crush?! Check out Frank's shots in Toronto over on Chromewaves.
Also, check out songs:illinois where Craig has a few MP3's of Sweet tunes including the oh so appropriate "Holy War" from 1991, "Nothing Lasts", and "Girlfriend".

I was supposed to go to that show but didn't. Gotta blame the kids for that one - not getting much sleep around here. Thanks for linking to me. BTW have you heard of OX, they're canadian, major Neil Young influences. They've got an mp3 up at their site (http://www.oxmusic.ws/index_sub.cfm?pg=records) or you can go to my Oct 15 post about them I think you'd like it.
